What is a VPS ?

VPS stands for Virtual Private Server.
A VPS is an isolated server that shares the hardware of a single physical server, however performs like a stand-alone server, with its own dedicated share of resources.
You can run your own applications, it can be rebooted independently, has its own root access, IP addresses, users, memory, processes, ports, and so forth.
As such a VPS offers the control and flexbility of a dedicated server however without the associated cost.
